Mucaryl ( N- acetyl cysteine ) is a respiratory drug which is used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). N acetyl cysteine is a mucolytic drug (drug that breaks down thick mucus ) which acts by breaking down mucus , reducing the viscosity and thereby makes the airways free for normal air exchange ( respiration ) .N – Acetyl cysteine is also known to possess anti inflammatory ( reduction  in swelling of the lungs ) action which helps reduce the bronchoconstriction .The treatment with Mucaryl thus helps to normalize breathing in the patients of COPD.The treatment thereby is known to improve the quality of life by reducing  exacerbations ( flareup of the COPD in patients ) .

Your doctor has prescribed Mucaryl  tablets since you may be suffering from COPD.COPD is also known as Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in medical terms.The disease specifically is known to represent itself in certain patient groups like smokers,people working in particulate matter releasing industry like cement/ coal factories as well as asbestos sheet making companies . People living in dense air pollution pockets are also prone to contracting the disease.

In COPD there is inflammation of the airways (bronchi) which lead to lowered air exchange thereby leads to breathlessness in the patient . At times there is also accumulation of thick mucus in the lungs which can further lead to complications and thus needs urgent medical attention. Common symptoms of COPD are:

  • Shortness of breath during daily activities
  • Chest tightness
  • Chronic cough with thick mucus generation which is yellow or slightly greenish in colour

Warnings and Precautions

Before using Mucaryl Tablet, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side-effects of the drug. Take as directed by your doctor or follow the direction printed on the product insert.   • Asthma patients report to doctor history of asthma
  • Monitoring patients with asthma
  • Nursing women may consider resuming nursing 30 hours after administration of Acetylcysteine
  • Patients less than 40 kg need adjustment in volume administered
  • Patients requiring fluid restriction need adjustment in volume administered

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Mucaryl Tablet is a contraindication. In addition, Mucaryl Tablet should not be used if you have the following conditions: Anaphylactoid reactions to Acetylcysteine

Drug Interactions

If you use other drugs or over the counter products at the same time, the effects of Mucaryl Tablet may change. This may increase your risk for side-effects or cause your drug not to work properly. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that you doctor can help you prevent or manage drug interactions. Mucaryl Tablet may interact with the following drugs and products: Kanamycin and Photofrin

Overdosage

Storage

Store medicines at room temperature, away from heat and direct light. Do not freeze medicines unless required by package insert. Keep medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into drainage unless instructed to do so. Medication discarded in this manner may contaminate the environment. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor for more details on how to safely discard Mucaryl Tablet.
