Depression is a mood disorder which results in a feeling of sadness, continuous low mood and loss of interest. The depressive mood persists and lasts on an average 6 to 8 months or longer.
Depression signs and symptoms include reduced interest or pleasure in activities previously enjoyed, loss of sexual desire, unintentional weight loss or low appetite, insomnia (sleep difficulties) or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping), feelings of worthlessness, restlessness, fatigue, loss of energy, impaired ability to concentrate or make decisions, thoughts of death or suicide and slowed movement and speech.
Depression is caused due to a complex factors like changes in neurotransmitter levels, environmental factors, genetics, psychological, social or psycho-social reasons.
Depression can be treated through Drug treatments like antidepressants, Psychotherapy including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and by offering Support (discussing practical solutions, educating family members, etc.).
Anxiety disorders lead to fear, excessive nervousness, apprehension, and worry. A person is diagnosed with anxiety disorder when he or she is said to have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns which interfere with daily function. These disorders also cause physical symptoms when the affected person alters the way he or she behaves and processes emotions.
Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder include restlessness, and a feeling of being “on-edge”, uncontrollable feelings of worry, sleep difficulties, increased irritability and difficulties in concentration.
Anxiety disorders can be caused by environmental stressors, such as difficulties at work and relationship problems, genetics, stress due to medical factors (an intensive surgery or prolonged recovery), brain chemistry (hormonal imbalance).
Treating anxiety disorders will require a combination of psychological counselling, medication and behavioral therapy. Additionally developing a support network of family members and friends, use of relaxation techniques, deep breathing and physical exercises will help release chemicals in the brain that trigger positive feelings.
