Montelukast belongs to class of drugs called selective leukotriene receptor antagonist. It inhibits the effects of chemical called cysteinyl leukotrienes in the airway. Cysteinyl leukotrienes is associated with airway oedema, smooth muscle contraction and inflammation.

Levocetirizine is an antihistamine. Histamine is a chemical that is released in body when a person having allergy comes in contact with the allergy trigger like pollen, ragweed, pet dander, or dust mites, etc. Histamine leads to swelling of the tissue in nose making it stuffy, running nose and eyes, sometimes mouth to itch. It .can also lead to itchy rash on skin, called hives.

Allergic symptoms are caused by your immune system due to various allergens that may trigger an allergic reaction. Allergies are dependant on your genes and can vary from person to person.

Allergic reactions happen when the immune system recognises an allergen and the cells release histamines which causes inflammation in that region. This prompts the immune system to respond to the inflammation and start deep repair.

Mechanism of Action

Montelukast is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist with a long duration of action. It inhibits cysteinyl leukotriene type-1 (CysLT1) receptor found in the human airway and on pro-inflammatory cells. The binding of CysLTs in leukotriene receptors are involved in the pathophysiology of asthma, including smooth muscle contraction, airway oedema and inflammation; CysLTs are released from the nasal mucosa after allergen exposure which is associated with symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
